Halqa Zikr

 Khanqah Qadiria Razvia

In Durban, His Eminence was a guest of a well-known prominent personality and a trustee of the Juma Mosque in Grey Street. At the Jummah Mosque, His Eminence began weekly Halqa Zikr programs on Thursdays, which were never seen publicly before. Thousands would flock to join in the proceedings weekly and reap the spiritual benefits, which flowed from these programs. These sessions became so popular that officials of other Mosques requested that His Eminence also perform the Halqa Zikr at their Mosques.

The unique part of the whole exercise was, as is well known, His Eminence would deliver a message to awaken the soul and guide one towards Almighty Allah before the Halqa Zikr began. No two sessions were similar, this showing the depth of knowledge and the wisdom of His Eminence.

Sometimes His Eminence would perform three of four sessions of Halqa Zikr at private functions at the homes of people who became devout disciples (mureeds). His Eminence also introduced the Igyarween Shareef, on the 11th of every Islamic month in honor of the Polestar of Saints, Sayyiduna Abdul Qadir Jilani (may Allah be pleased with him) where discourses of the various teachings and aspects of the life of Ghaus-ul-Azam were given. The popularity of this new spiritual event in the lives of Muslims was so overwhelming that people started to have Igyarween Shareef functions in their homes, with His Eminence as guest of honor. His Eminence delivered such vibrant discourses, pearls of wisdom, at these functions that people started to change their lifestyles, trying to live in conformity with the true message of Islam brought to them by His Eminence. A very important point to note is that His Eminence not only delivered these discourses but also practiced these discourses.

The first 'open invitation' function at Isipingo Beach, Durban, where Meelad-un-Nabi and Igyarween Shareef were celebrated over a weekend, was attended by thousands of people. This function is very much alive today, thanks to His Eminence.

A Halqa Zikr program would be held after Fajr prayers every Sunday morning at his official residence in Isipingo Beach, where the teachings and discourses of Huzoor Ghaus-ul-Azam (may Allah be pleased with him) would be discussed with hundreds of disciples and well-wishers. His Eminence also introduced these spiritually enriching programs in the provinces of South Africa.

The heights of religious and spiritual fervor inspired by His Eminence were not seen prior to 1968 and in the years to come although many prominent Pirs were in South Africa at that time. One may ask whether there were any sincere Pirs before or after him, who brought a similar message to South Africa. It would be unwise to judge the status of the different Pirs who visited South Africa although many adherents to this Path were imposters who sought only to receive gifts, money, fame, and name. Many have witnessed the arrival of His Eminence, and seen his dedication and progress during the past 32 years. In the course, many other Pirs have visited periodically. His Eminence kept coming back to complete the work he started.

He has worked and influenced so many Muslims as no other Islamic mystic from anywhere has done. His Eminence has spread the branches of the spiritual order of the Qadiria, wide and strong in Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Umzinto, Tongaat, Lenasia, Gauteng (Johannesburg), Laudium, Pretoria, Lesotho, and Cape Town. His dynamic, direct and pragmatic approach to religious discourses and his fiercely substantiated arguments relating to the beloved Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace), the Ahle Bayt (the family of the Holy Prophet), the wives of the Prophet, the Companions, followers and successors and every Lover of the beloved Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) are unique.

His Eminence is indeed from amongst the restless breed and his inexhaustible energy is simple baffling. His every visit to South Africa has been constantly spent guiding, organizing and imparting advice to the ceaseless flow of disciples, friends and well-wishers at his official residence in Chatsworth, Durban, the Khanqah Qadiria Razvia.

In March 1982, the foundation stone of the first Khanqah Qadiria Razvia of South Africa was laid by His Eminence at Woodhurst, Chatworth, Durban and it has since become a center of the Sunni Razvi Society International and its publications as well. As one stands outside the beautiful white building, and admires it, or you stand on the roof garden and look across you have a full view of the sea and the surrounding Durban. You feel that your head is touching the sky, and the spiritual tranquility that pervades the Khanqah is truly wonderful, it a true heaven of rest for the weary soul.
