A Moments Reflection

Religion is usually restricted to the four walls of the prayer house and once we are outside, we take the liberty to act differently, we forget everything. Some remember they were Muslims only in Ramadaan, prayer beads in their hands, maker rounds to the House of Allah where Quran is read, sermons delivered, would listen to everything, but understand nothing, seasonal piety, the Way of Indifference. Superiority complex, lack of respect for others, egoistic attitudes, self-interest, money-mindedness, jealousy, hatred, ostentation and so on all permeate our whole being with the result that we cause harm to ourselves and our brethren. Islam should dominate our hearts, and then moral degradation is bound to disintegrate.

The Polestar of Saints, Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (may Allah be pleased with him) advises his disciples, by quoting what the beloved Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, "a moments reflection is worth more than a year of worship". The value of every action is hidden in the essence of thought and Truth. Meditation on Almighty Allah and contemplation is essential to steer up to the correct Path. Whoever contemplates on a matter and seeks its cause finds that each of its parts has many has many parts of its own and finds that each of these is the cause of many other things.

Divine love will not come alive and blossom in your hearts until the great enemy, the desires of the flesh, dies and leaves you. First, you must be cleansed of your ego. Then you will have a partial conscience, although continuing to sin. You will have a feeling of remorse but this is not enough. The seeker must pass beyond this stage to the where the Truth will be revealed to you, the Truth of right and wrong. Then you will stop doing wrong and do that which is right, thus your entire being been cleansed. Opposing the flesh, you must also fight against the animal desires against its animalistic desires such as gluttony, excessive sleep, idle occupations and against the characteristics of the wild beasts: negativity, anger, war and aggressiveness. Then you must work hard against to discharge yourself of the evil habits of the ego: arrogance, pride, envy, vengeance, greed and all other sicknesses of the heart.

Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir (may Allah be pleased with him) further advises that the disciple’s heart must become like a polished mirror. The disciple must wipe the heart clean of the veil of dust and dirt, which has gathered upon it, because the heart is destined to reflect the light of divine secrets. When the light from Almighty Allah, who is the light of the heavens and earth begin to shine upon the sections of the heart, the lamp of the heart will be lit. Once the lamp is ignited in the disciple’s inner self, the rest will come, either all at once or little by little. He urged his disciples to really listen and understand his words carefully.

The dark cloudy skies of the unconsciousness will be lit by divine presence and the peace and beauty of the full moon which will rise from the horizon, shedding light upon light, ever rising in the sky, passing through its appointed stages as Almighty Allah has ordained. By the glorious morning light, your night of unconsciousness will see the brightness of the sky. Then you will inhale the perfume of remembrance and repent in the early hours of the morning of unconsciousness and regret your life spent in sleep.

Mullah Nasruddin, the humorous sage of the Middle East was once looking for something in the middle of the street. He was down on all fours, searching and searching. A man who knew him came by, and asked him what he was looking for. "I've lost a key", the Mulla Naruddin replied. Therefore, the man began to help him. After a while, though, unable to find anything, the man asked: "Mullah Nasruddin, where did you say you dropped the key?" "Down in the basement of my house, "Mullah Nasruddin said. The man laughed. "Why, Mulla Nasruddin," he exclaimed, "in that case we're looking in the wrong place. Why aren't we looking in your basement instead?" " Ah", said Mullah Nasruddin, "it's too dark in my basement. This is where the light is."

Thus, we are fortunate to have His Eminence, Fakhrul Islam Allama al-Hajj Hafiz Qari Maulana Muhammad Ibrahim Khushtar Siddiqui Qadiri Razvi (May Allah be pleased with him) to guide us to the light and connect through the Chain of Transmission with the Masters of the Path.

The Five Treasures of the Qadiriyya Tariqat are guidelines and advice which was compiled by Sayyid Kwaja Sultan Muhammad (may Allah be pleased with him) of Jalesar in the year 1117 AH during the rule of Emperor Aurangzeb. If these five wealth are put into practice the disciple will be beneficial both in this world and in the hereafter and ultimately will help towards achieving the love and knowledge of Almighty Allah.
